Medication

Your dentist may prescribe nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin or ibuprofen if you need them for pain and swelling. He can also suggest a muscle relaxant so that your jaw can be relaxed if you grind or clench your teeth. Anti-anxiety medications may also be prescribed to help relieve stress. In low doses, they can also help reduce or control pain.

Dental splints/occlusal splints/stabilization splints/bite guard

These plastic dental appliances are placed in the mouth so that it keeps the teeth in alignment and prevent tooth grinding. This is like a mouth guard that will keep your upper teeth from grinding against your lower teeth. This can help a lot inf taking the pressure off the jaw joints and muscles. This will allow the joints and muscles to relax and heal. A bite guard does not only alleviate TMJ disorder symptoms but it will also help to prevent wear on your teeth from grinding that can lead to other problems.

If your dentist suggests for you to use a splint, he will determine when you should wear it during the day or night. He will also determine how long you should wear your splint. Splints should not be worn for a long time since it can change your bite. You should stop using the splint if it causes or increases your pain. Contact your dentist when this happens.

Dental work

If you have missing teeth, your dentist can replace them with crowns, bridges or braces so that the biting surface of your teeth will be balanced. This will help correct a bite problem. In some cases, your dentist can adjust or reshape some of your teeth to fix an uneven bite. Braces are also recommended. This can help realign your teeth and jaws so that your mouth can close in the proper position. In many cases, this can greatly help alleviate symptoms of TMJ disorder.

Surgery may be necessary in severe cases of TMJ disorder.
