Pediatric Care

What is Pediatric Dentistry?

Pediatric dentistry is a persons first interaction with a dentist as a child and one which ensures the child's dental health. A pediatric dentist can treat a child as young as a newborn through adolescence.

A visit to a Pediatric dentist act as an educational resource for parents.

Pediatric dentistry is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and is one of the ten dental specialties identified by the American Dental Association. The AAPD suggests first dental visit of an infant after the emergency of the baby’s first tooth or by the child’s first birthday.

An early oral examination helps in the detection of treatment of tooth decay as it also helps to maintain oral health, change aberrant habits, and ensure treatment and recovery at early stages.

An early pediatric visit also helps to groom the parents on preventive home care(brushing and fluorides), carry out preventive risk assessments, guidance on the use and prevention of finger, thumb and pacifier habits. Diet counselling, avoidance of injuries to the mouth and teeth and information on growth and development of the child can be shared by the Pediatric. This can act as a major learning and informative interaction with your dentist to ensure good dental and oral hygiene especially for first time parents.

A range of treatment provided by a Pediatric dentist include:

  • Diagnosis and treatment of oral disease. Both precautionary and healing.
  • Interpretation of diagnostic and x-ray
  • Devise treatment plans to restore oral health and formulate treatment plans for children with special needs.
  • Monitor growth and development of gums, teeth, and jaw.
  • Treat dental malocclusion (misaligned teeth) with interceptive orthodontic treatment.
  • Carry out surgical procedures on teeth, bone and soft tissues of the oral cavity.
  • Facilitating emergency care(dental trauma, dental infection)
  • Treatment of pediatric cases under varying levels of anesthetic (minimal, mild or intense) or general anesthesia.
